Aindrila Mukhopadhyay

Dr. Aindrila Mukhopadhyay is Director for Chemical Analysis (Functional Genomics) at JBEI in Emeryville, and she is a staff scientist with Berkeley Lab's Physical Biosciences Division. She leads a multidisciplinary team that studies stress response in bacteria using microbiological, biochemical and systems biology tools.

As part of JBEI, she adopts targeted approaches to elucidate causes of inhibition during fuel/solvent production from lignocellulose using the host microbes such as Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Her team hopes to engineer better hosts for metabolite production and develop tools that are universally useful for microbial cellular engineering. In the study of metabolically engineered microbes, Dr. Mukhopadhyay focuses on the role of efflux pumps as a mechanism to relieve toxicity from metabolite accumulation and increasing titer of metabolite production.

She received an MSc in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and has a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Chicago.
