Before joining the faculty at Berkeley in 2001, he was John G. Searle Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Professor of Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan.
His studies center on research at the interface of chemistry and biology, and are focused on questions concerning biological catalysis and other inquiries relating to protein structure and function. A central theme of his work is the discovery of novel functions and mechanisms and the application of that knowledge to drug design.
Marletta has received numerous awards, including the 1995 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship Award. In 2004, he received the Harrison-Howe Award. In 1999, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Institute of Medicine.
